Shell moulding is a metal casting process using a thin, resin-bonded sand mould formed around a heated metal pattern, creating intricate parts with high precision, smooth finishes, and good dimensional accuracy, ideal for mass production of small to medium components.

The process involves creating a reusable pattern, coating it with a sand-resin mixture, curing it, joining the resulting shell halves, pouring molten metal, and breaking the shell away.

Advantages of shell moulding:

  • Smoother cavity surface permits easier flow of molten metal and better surface finish on casting

  • Good dimensional accuracy

  • Machining often not required

  • Mold collapsibility minimizes cracks in casting Can be mechanized for mass production
