Shell moulding is a metal casting process using a thin, resin-bonded sand mould formed around a heated metal pattern, creating intricate parts with high precision, smooth finishes, and good dimensional accuracy, ideal for mass production of small to medium components.
The process involves creating a reusable pattern, coating it with a sand-resin mixture, curing it, joining the resulting shell halves, pouring molten metal, and breaking the shell away.
Smoother cavity surface permits easier flow of molten metal and better surface finish on casting
Good dimensional accuracy
Machining often not required
Mold collapsibility minimizes cracks in casting Can be mechanized for mass production
